Praying the Beatitudes
Back Up Next

Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.
Heavenly Father, please bless us with an understanding of our poverty before You. Make us to know how poor, blind, naked and stupid we are compared to You. Show us how we cannot protect ourselves, provide for ourselves or guide ourselves adequately. We renounce all self-sovereignty.

Blessed are those who mourn, for they shall be comforted.
Heavenly Father, please bless us with an understanding of the gravity of our sins. Bless us, Father, with a heart to feel the betrayal our sins represent. Open our eyes to our sins, that we might confess and renounce them.

Blessed are the meek, for they shall inherit the Earth.
Heavenly Father, please bless us with a heart that trembles at your Word, that we might obey you in all areas in our lives. We renounce seeing you as merely a helper and teacher. We confess You as our Lord and master.

Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they shall be filled.
Heavenly Father, bless us with a hunger and thirst for your righteousness in the world, starting in our own lives. Bless us, Father, with a craving in our hearts. We renounce all unrighteousness in our hearts.

Blessed are the merciful, for they shall obtain mercy.
Heavenly Father, bless us with a heart full of mercy and love. Remind us to forgive.  Point out the needs around us. Bless us, Father, with a heart transplant. We renounce any self-seeking.

Blessed are the pure in heart, for they shall see God.
Heavenly Father, bless us with a heart that sees and feels how Your heart sees and feels, for You are holy and perfect. Bless us with transparency before others. We renounce any distrust we have for You in all areas of our lives.

Blessed are the peacemakers, for they shall be called sons of God.
Heavenly Father, bless us with a heart for making peace between You and the world with Your gospel of peace. Bless us with a heart to make peace between brethren. We renounce any bitterness, fear or unforgiveness that would get in Your way.

Blessed are those who are persecuted for righteousness' sake, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.
Heavenly Father, bless us with a hope and confidence in heaven that will cause us to persevere in the face of intimidation, threats, torture and temptations.  Bless us with courage to live out your salvation in this alien world.  We renounce timidity and pleasure-seeking.

We ask these things in the name of Jesus Christ of Nazareth.  Amen.
